Decorating TipsTraditional or Contemporary... When selecting a carpet, you should first determine the proper size for the space, then evaluate your natural light sources. As a rug is woven, the knots are pulled torwards the weaver, creating a directional pile. Looking into the pile ("dark side") reveals more detail; while looking over the pile ("light side") highlights the colors. Best results are achieved when the light side of the rug faces the main natural light source in the room, because more reflected light will enhance the color. Next, determine the direction of your light source. Eastern light favors a "sunrise" palette, while western light enhances the "sunset" tones. Southern exposures have direct light all day long. Care must be taken when the natural light is made indirect by northern exposure or physical obstructions. For example, the traditional dining room (below left), has lots of cold northern light all day long. A yellow tint added to the trim and ceiling paint, plus our Arts & Crafts hooked rug make this the most cheerful room in the house When measuring for a carpet, take into account obstacles such as the hearth, vents, air returns and built-ins. Be sure to subtract equal amounts from each side of the room to ensure even spacing. When decorating with area sizes, try to keep the furniture completely on or off the rug.
