| Dard Hunter was born in 1883 in Steubenville, Ohio. He inherited his
pursuit of artistic and cultural activities from his father, William H. Hunter, newspaper
editor and partner in the Lonhuda Pottery firm. Interest in book design led him to study
at the Roycroft Shops in East Aurora, New York, followed by Vienna and London. The designs
produced during these years are among the best and most sought after work of any Roycroft
artist. This eventually instilled in him an abiding interest in handmade papers and book
production. After traveling over 200,000 miles to remote regions of the world, writing 18
books on the subject and establishing the American Museum of Papermaking (formerly the
Dard Hunter Museum), he came to be acknowledged as the world's leading authority on paper.
He died in 1966, in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Rugs in the Dard Hunter collection are available in custom sizes, three
